Ingredients
One 9×13 chocolate cake or brownie
30 ounces cherry pie filling
4 ounces kirsch or cherry brandy
2 boxes chocolate pudding
1 ½ cups cold heavy whipping cream
2–4 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Fresh cherries
Shaved chocolate
Chocolate sprinkles
Icing sugar or cocoa powder
Instructions
- Bake the chocolate cake or brownie according to package or recipe directions and let it cool completely.
- Prepare the chocolate pudding according to the package instructions or use a homemade version.
- In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Cut the cooled chocolate cake into bite-sized pieces and layer them at the bottom of a trifle dish.
- Top the cake pieces with a layer of cherry pie filling and a drizzle of kirsch (or substitute for cherry juice for a non-alcoholic version).
- Add a layer of chocolate pudding over the cherry filling, followed by a layer of whipped cream.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with whipped cream on top.
- Garnish with fresh cherries, shaved chocolate, and chocolate sprinkles. Dust with icing sugar or cocoa powder if desired.
- Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute whipped cream with whipped topping. Make sure to chill your trifle well for optimal flavor!
