Indulge in the layers of chocolatey goodness with this Black Forest Trifle featuring rich chocolate cake, tart cherry pie filling, and creamy whipped topping for a delightful dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

One 9×13 chocolate cake or brownie

30 ounces cherry pie filling

4 ounces kirsch or cherry brandy

2 boxes chocolate pudding

1 ½ cups cold heavy whipping cream

24 tablespoons powdered sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Fresh cherries

Shaved chocolate

Chocolate sprinkles

Icing sugar or cocoa powder

Instructions

  • Bake the chocolate cake or brownie according to package or recipe directions and let it cool completely.
  • Prepare the chocolate pudding according to the package instructions or use a homemade version.
  • In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  • Cut the cooled chocolate cake into bite-sized pieces and layer them at the bottom of a trifle dish.
  • Top the cake pieces with a layer of cherry pie filling and a drizzle of kirsch (or substitute for cherry juice for a non-alcoholic version).
  • Add a layer of chocolate pudding over the cherry filling, followed by a layer of whipped cream.
  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with whipped cream on top.
  • Garnish with fresh cherries, shaved chocolate, and chocolate sprinkles. Dust with icing sugar or cocoa powder if desired.
  • Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute whipped cream with whipped topping. Make sure to chill your trifle well for optimal flavor!
