Ingredients
8 tbs unsalted butter
1.5–2 lbs granny smith apples peeled & sliced into 1/4 inch pieces
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup + 1 tbs all purpose flour spooned & leveled
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup dark brown sugar packed
3/4 cup white sugar
2 large eggs room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup sour cream room temperature
4 tbs unsalted butter
3/4 cup dark brown sugar packed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.
- In a saucepan, melt 4 tbs of unsalted butter until it turns brown and fragrant. Remove from heat.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine dark brown sugar and the browned butter, stirring until combined.
- Arrange the sliced apples on the bottom of the pan over the butter and sugar mixture, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
- In another bowl, beat together the remaining unsalted butter, white sugar, and eggs until light and fluffy.
- Add the vanilla extract and sour cream, mixing well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt, then gradually add to the wet ingredients.
- Pour the batter over the arranged apples in the pan and smooth the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
Notes
For best results, use room temperature ingredients and allow the cake to cool slightly before flipping.
