Description
These Christmas sugar cookies are perfect for the holiday season, offering a delightful buttery flavor and a customizable icing to bring festive cheer to your celebrations.
Ingredients
2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter
softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
4.5–5 Tablespoons room temperature water
pinch salt
optional gel food coloring
optional sprinkles
Instructions
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together on high speed until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using), and mix until combined.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low until combined. If the dough is too sticky, add 1 more Tablespoon of flour.
- Divide the dough into 2 equal parts and roll out each part to about 1/4-inch thickness between parchment paper. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1–2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut the dough into shapes and place on the baking sheets, spacing 3 inches apart.
- Bake for 11–12 minutes until lightly browned around the edges. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- For the icing, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, corn syrup, and water until desired consistency is reached. Adjust with more water if needed.
- Decorate the cookies using the icing and any desired sprinkles. Allow the icing to set for 24 hours.
- Store decorated cookies at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
Notes
Chill dough for the best results and to make rolling easier. Allow icing to set for 24 hours for optimal results.
